The Wixárikas: Culture and Spirituality of Art
The Wixárikas, also known as Huicholes, are an indigenous group native to the mountainous region of northern Mexico, mainly in the hills of Nayarit and Jalisco. With a rich cultural history dating back centuries, the Wixárikas have maintained their traditions and worldview throughout time, being recognized for their artistic expressions, unique spirituality and deep rootedness to nature.
The Wixárika culture is deeply spiritual and rooted in the relationship with nature and the spiritual world. Their worldview is based on the belief that the world was created and is sustained by deities and spirits that reside in all the elements of nature, such as the sun, moon, animals and plants. The Wixárikas consider that maintaining a balance with these elements is essential for their well-being and that of their community.
One of the most distinctive manifestations of the Wixárika culture is their art. They create colorful works of art using chaquira beads (small glass beads), Which are placed by hand, one bead at a time creating spiritual cosmovision. These pieces are not only visually stunning, but also have a deep meaning, as they are considered to be portals to the spirit world, allowing communication with deities and spirits who in turn pour protection and blessings.
Our exclusive line of Wixàrika art is made available by our collaboration with artemufasa who promotes and aims to perpetuate this ancestral art. Proceeds from each sale go towards the positive and direct impact of the Wixàrika communities providing aid mainly in housing, health and education.
